Claim Payments by Check or ACH

The Alerus Benefits debit card is the easiest way to pay for many eligible expenses at the point of sale. However, there are times when you may need to submit a claim for reimbursement instead.

In these cases, you can submit your claim through the Alerus website, mobile app, or another method, and you’ll be reimbursed by direct deposit (ACH) or check.

When Should I Submit a Claim Instead of Using the Debit Card?

Submit a claim if:

  • Your debit card is not accepted by the provider
  • You choose to pay out of pocket using another payment method
(for example, paying for an expense from a prior plan year)

How to Submit a Claim

You can submit a claim using any of the following methods. Online and mobile app submissions are the fastest and most secure.

How and When You’ll Be Paid

Payment overview

Once your claim is received and approved, the timing of reimbursement depends on your employer’s payment schedule.

You’ll receive payment by:

  • Direct deposit (ACH), or
  • Mailed check

(Based on your selected payment method in your Alerus Benefits account.)

To confirm your employer’s schedule, contact your HR department.

Daily payment schedule

  • Approved claims are processed every business day
  • Example:
    • Claim approved: Monday
    • Funds collected from employer: Tuesday
    • Payment issued: Wednesday

Weekly payment schedule

  • Approved claims are processed once per week
  • Example:
    • Claim approved: Monday
    • Funds collected from the employer: Friday
    • Payment issued: Following Monday

Important to know

  • Claims must be reviewed and approved before payment is scheduled
  • There may be a short delay between submission and payment, depending on your employer’s schedule

Holiday exceptions

If a payment date falls on a holiday, the payment will be issued on the next scheduled processing day.

Example:

  • If payments are normally issued on Monday and that Monday is a holiday, your payment will be issued the following Monday
