Claim Payments by Check or ACH


The Alerus Benefits debit card is a convenient way for participants to pay for eligible expenses at the point of sale. However, in some cases, claims are submitted separately through the Alerus website, mobile app, or other methods.

When this happens, reimbursements are issued to participants by direct deposit (ACH) or mailed check.

Payment overview

Once a claim is received, reviewed, and approved, it is scheduled for payment based on the payment schedule your organization has selected with Alerus.

Your selected schedule determines when:

  • Funds are collected from your organization
  • Payments are issued to participants

Payment schedule options

Daily payment schedule

  • Approved claims are processed each business day as needed
  • Only claims in a pending payment status are included

Example timeline:

  • Claim approved and scheduled: Monday
  • Funds collected from the employer: Tuesday
  • Payment issued to participant: Wednesday
  • Reimbursement is delivered via the participant’s selected payment method (ACH or check)

Weekly payment schedule

  • Approved claims are processed once per week
  • Only claims in a pending payment status are included

Example timeline:

  • Claim approved and scheduled: Monday
  • Funds collected from the employer: Tuesday
  • Payment issued to participant: Following Monday
  • Reimbursement is delivered via the participant’s selected payment method (ACH or check)

Important to know

  • Claims must be reviewed and approved by Alerus before entering the payment schedule
  • There may be a delay between claim submission and payment scheduling
  • Payment timing depends entirely on your organization’s selected schedule

Holiday exceptions

If a scheduled payment processing day falls on a holiday:

  • That processing day is skipped
  • Payments are issued on the next scheduled processing day based on your selected schedule

Example:

  • If you follow a weekly schedule with Monday payments and Monday is a holiday, payments will be issued the following Monday in the next cycle
